Common foot and ankle conditions

ABOUT

Common foot and ankle problems can significantly impact mobility and daily activities. Here are some of the most typical issues, their causes, symptoms, and treatments:

Plantar Fasciitis:

  • Causes: Inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes. It is often caused by repetitive strain, flat feet, high arches, improper footwear, or sudden weight gain.
  • Symptoms: Sharp heel pain, especially with the first steps in the morning or after prolonged periods of rest. Pain may also worsen with activity.
  • Treatments: Rest, ice, stretching exercises, over-the-counter pain medications, orthotic inserts, physical therapy, and in severe cases, corticosteroid injections or extracorporeal shock wave therapy.

Achilles Tendinitis:

  • Causes: Inflammation of the Achilles tendon, usually due to overuse, excessive running or jumping, improper footwear, or tight calf muscles.
  • Symptoms: Pain, swelling, and tenderness in the back of the ankle, particularly during physical activity.
  • Treatments: Rest, ice, gentle stretching, wearing supportive shoes, heel lifts, physical therapy, and in severe cases, corticosteroid injections or immobilization with a cast or boot.

Ankle Sprains:

  • Causes: Stretching or tearing of ligaments in the ankle, typically due to an awkward twist or turn of the foot during physical activity or a fall.
  • Symptoms: Pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight on the affected ankle.
  • Treatments: Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE method), wearing a brace or compression bandage, pain medications, physical therapy, and in severe cases, immobilization with a cast.

Bunions:

  • Causes: Bunions are bony protrusions that develop at the base of the big toe due to improper foot mechanics, genetics, or wearing tight, narrow shoes.
  • Symptoms: Pain, redness, and swelling at the base of the big toe, and the big toe may start to angle toward the other toes.
  • Treatments: Wearing properly fitting shoes with a wider toe box, orthotic inserts, padding, over-the-counter pain medications, and in severe cases, surgical correction.

Hammer Toes:

  • Causes: A deformity in the toe joints that causes the toe to bend downward, resembling a hammer. It can be caused by genetics, wearing tight shoes, or an imbalance in toe muscles.
  • Symptoms: Pain, corns, or calluses on the top of the affected toe where it rubs against the shoe.
  • Treatments: Wearing properly fitting shoes, orthotic inserts, toe exercises, padding, and in severe cases, surgical correction.

Gout:

  • Causes: Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, often affecting the big toe joint.
  • Symptoms: Sudden and severe pain, redness, swelling, and warmth in the affected joint.
  • Treatments: Medications to manage pain and inflammation, lifestyle modifications (e.g., dietary changes to reduce purine-rich foods), and medications to lower uric acid levels.
